Why Go Chain-link? Let’s Look At The Options.

Chain-link Fence with Razor&Barb WireThe average cost of installing a fence is roughly $2500, with most falling between $1500 and $5500. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the type of fence you choose will have a huge impact on costs—not just for the material, but for installation as well.

Cost considerations include parts, permits, making sure the installation won’t interfere with any utilities—even the grading of the land can have an impact! If you have a slope to deal with it makes installation more difficult, potentially raising labour costs.

The primary cost factor in fence installation is always going to be the material. Assuming the fence is a standard height of six feet, the cost per linear foot can range anywhere from $15 to $35. Let’s have a quick look at the choices available.

Wood – Wood is a difficult option to nail down because type can impact cost, but assuming your choice is cedar, the cost per linear foot can be anywhere from $15 to $35—if you install it yourself. While is the affordable option, wood fences in Vancouver tend to require regular maintenance and repair due to the Wet Coast weather.

Vinyl – Vinyl fencing has a number of advantages. It has a unique look, a variety of colour options, and is very easy to clean. But for a homeowner the biggest problem is the cost—anywhere from $10 to $26 per linear foot.

Aluminium – This is the most expensive metals, but you get what you pay for! Aluminum fenicng requires little maintenance and is not prone to rust. A powdercoating can make then fence even more resilient, and the steep initial price tag  $22 to $35 per linear foot will be offset by low maintenance requirements.

Wrought Iron – Once considered the ultimate in fencing, wrought iron nonetheless has some drawbacks. It’s prone to rust, which is a problem in Vancouver. It’s relatively easy to dent, and expensive to fix or replace. Additionally, there’s the base costs to consider.  Wrought iron can range from $20 to $100 per linear foot. That’s even before labor is involved.

Chain-link – Chain-link fences are the perfect choice if you want a basic, affordable structure. The base price is lower than any of the previous options. More importantly, chain-link fences have a long lifespan and low maintenance requirements. The one downside, of course, is the utilitarian look. Chainlink is not aesthetically pleasing on its own, but there are options to spruce up this plain-Jane of the fencing world. Some options include a metallic colour coating—or simply camouflaging the fence with shrubbery and beautiful vines.
